Coronary Disease

Coronary artery disease is the most murderous in Western countries. It kills 600,000 people each year in the USA. Although it develops slowly over many years, instant death (sudden death) in one third of cases.

Blood vessels that carry oxygen and nutrients to the heart muscle itself (or infarction) are small and form a crown around the heart (hence the name of vessel “coronary”).

Coronary heart disease starts when small blood vessels in these calls develop atherosclerotic plaques (see atherosclerosis), which are an accumulation of cholesterol, calcium and other substances in the vessel walls. Then he commits a greater or lesser degree the flow of oxygen and nutrients to the heart itself, with effects ranging from angina or myocardial infarction, even heart failure.

Arteriosclerosis various vessels occurs irregularly, in some more than others. The presence in a given vessel atherosclerotic plaques in the vessel causes and that there are close to them more easily develop a thrombus, a clot of platelets, clotting proteins and cell debris just plugging the vessel. An embolism is a clot that has traveled through the blood to a small glass where enclaves like a piston. Thrombosis and embolism are therefore interchangeable.

The same factors that promote atherosclerosis are the factors underpinning the development of coronary disease.

Moreover, the walls of coronary arteries have muscle and this muscle can spasm, making it even more narrow glass in a given area. Coronary spasms can occur without apparent cause, but also by exposure to cold or severe emotional stress.

Coronary artery disease is diagnosed by a series of elementary tests, and for those with osteoporosis may be a need for other more sophisticated tests (stress test, cardiac catheterization or coronary angiography, isotopic study).

The treatment of coronary heart disease includes a number of medications and dietary and preventive measures. The surgery can get to correct the obstruction of the coronary vessels or by bypass (shunt) or in some cases by opening narrowed vessels or coronary angioplasty.
